Lets Stop Poisoning Our Children!!!!

By Ken Shuey

· Every 7 minutes a child in America is taken to an emergency room for poisoning from household cleaning products, the stuff under the sink.

· Bleach and formaldehyde are in so many different products. And not only is swallowing the stuff bad, but it out-gases into the indoor environment.

· Women who stay at home all day, have a 54% higher rate of cancer than women who work outside the home because their indoor environment is much more toxic than outside.

· Next time you're in the supermarket, just walk near the aisle with the detergents and household cleaners -- the stuff out-gases right through the sealed containers. Spend some time in that aisle and you will probably get dizzy from the fumes.

· And of course, we are having an epidemic of allergies and asthma with children these days.

. Some birth defects have been traced to mothers' use of chemicals during pregnancy.

· The factories that handle these same chemicals have pre-cautionary measures for their workers that are required by law. Why are they not required for the consumers who pay for them and use them?

· It's even possible now that SIDS is a result of the bleach residue on the sheets and pillowcases of babies in their cribs.

The household product makers that we have grown to trust have betrayed us. Big time!!!
The workers in factories that handle these toxic chemicals have safety rules that they must obey. What about the consumers who pay for them and use them? Could it be that the Consumer Safety Commission has betrayed us too? Does it sound to you like maybe they are in cahoots with the manufacturer of this stuff?

Cascade, if swallowed burns out the child's esophagus.
Burns it out !!!

Have you seen the commercial where the mother is jumping up and down with excitement because her baby is playing on the floor that she has just mopped with her Swiffer? She is so happy because the floor is now germ free. She doesn't realize that it may be germ free, but it's not poison free. There's a thin film of bleach left of the floor. Baby plays on floor -- toxins are absorbed into skin, fingers go in the mouth -- toxins go into mouth, baby breaths fumes. The cumulative effect of these toxic buildups in the system can cause all kinds of bad stuff for that baby.

Every surface cleaner will leave some residue on the surface. If that residue is a caustic chemical it will be picked up on the skin of the person or pet that contacts it. So if you are cleaning floors, countertops, tables, doorknobs, appliances, clothes or anything else with harsh chemicals, a small amount of the chemicals will be not only be on the hands of the person who used it, but also on the skin of persons or pets that touch it, play in it, eat off of it, wear it, or somehow touch it in any way.

Sleeping on sheets that have been laundered in bleach and other caustic chemicals not only puts them in contact with your skin, but it also but also into your lungs.

Pollution in the outdoor environment has received a lot of press in the media; but little attention is given to the fact that the indoor environment of the average home in America is more toxic than the outdoor environment. That's why stay-at-home moms are at a higher risk for cancer than women who work outside the home.

It isn't just touching or swallowing caustic chemicals that is harmful, just breathing them can be very bad for you. When you open the dishwasher after using Cascade or some other dishwasher detergent you see the hot vapor rising out of the open door. That toxic vapor is not only bad for you to breathe directly, it also adds to the indoor atmosphere of your home. And today's homes are more tightly sealed from the outdoors than the houses of the past.

Many products that we trust as safe are not safe even when they are in their sealed containers. When you walk down the supermarket aisle where the cleaning products are you can't help noticing the strong smell. It's so strong it can make you dizzy, and it causes some people to break out in hives. The containers on these shelves are all sealed. None have been opened. Yet the fumes from the chemical ingredients are there because they are so strong that they out-gas right through their containers and you breathe the particles into your lungs.

The young developing lungs of children are particularly susceptible to these hazardous particles.

Here's a list of some of the chemicals that are in everyday cleaning products:
Each year over a million children are accidentally poisoned in their homes. 250,000 of these victims are hospitalized. 3,000 children will end up in intensive care. Dozens will die. Thousands of children and adults are permanently difigured or injured through contact with chemicals in the home each year. Incredibly, the most common substances to poison children, are household cleaners. Many of these products are considered safe! Think of your own home -- you probably have dozens of bottles of cleaners, containing hundreds of chemicals. Could an accident happen in your home?

Check off the products you use in your home and evaluate your risks. All information comes from actual manufactureres Material Safety Data Sheets and National Poison Control Centers.

___ Cosmetics -- Cosmetics are second only to cleaning products as a poisoner of children. They are not regulated like cleaners and have no warning labels.

The labels on products only have to warn of the acute (immeidate) harms from ingesting a product, breathing the fumes, or contact with the eyes and skin. They don't reveal the harms presented by chronic (long-term) exposure to the chemicals in these products. Now sse the long-term risks presented by the chemical-laden products in your home. As you have seen many household cleaners are very dangerous. They are just as dangerous when they are used properly and even when they are not beign used at all. Most products "outgas" even from their sealed containers.

Infertility is on the rise. Cancer in children has risen 20% over the past two decades. It is the number one killer ofchildren by disease. The asthma rate has tripled in children over the past twenty years. Asthma deaths in children have increased 118% since 1980. ADD and learning disorders have skyrocketed over the last twenty years. All these conditions have been linked to chemicals in the home. In fact, one study has linked 50% of all health problems to deteriorated indoor air quility.. Take a looka t the productsyouuse and possible dangers you are being exposed to. Consider how many different chemicals are in you home's air. and the potential danger of the "toxic coctail".

Cancer in smokers is the result of daily exposure to the trace amounts of carcinogens in cigarettes. In the same way, people who are exposed daily to low levels of carcinogens in their cleaning products face the same risks. Chemicals in household products also put the user at risk for nervous system damage, kidney damage, liver damage, and asthma.

Next time you're at the supermarket walk down the aisle where the household cleaners and laundry detergents are. You get bowled over by the smell of those toxic chemicals. They outgas right through their sealed containers!

Children are especially vulnerable to the chemical fumes released by these products.

None of this has to happen?!

Fortunately, switching brands is easy. There are companies that manufacture safer products for your home. They are free from ammonia, phenol, chlorine, petroleum distillates, synthetic solvents, and other dangerous ingredients.

There are products available that work better than the toxic ones. They are so safe that they don't even need a warning label. And they work better and cost less.

My family has been using a line of green products for 5 years and we have found them to be better, safer, and less expensive than the common supermarket variety.
